With the omega city behind them and the open road stretching ahead, Cera was able to sit back and enjoy the journey. It was early summer and the scenery was actually quite pleasant. The land consisted of low, gently rolling hills covered with patchy forest of pine and assorted deciduous trees. The old highway cut through it in a straight line from east to west. Some of the low hills had exposed sections of rock, showing where the land had been blasted and bulldozed in the distant past to clear the way for the road.
About twenty kilometres down the road from the first bridge they encountered, they crossed another that was even shorter. The water beneath was more marsh than a river, and the span was so low and solid that Cera couldn’t tell the difference between highway and bridge. The asphalt was filled with cracks and there were some patches of exposed ground and grass growing here and there, but otherwise the ancient road had survived the last fift
